Sunday 17th May - Port Douglas
Julia: Yesterday, we had a casual start for the day and then were driven to Port Douglas where we stayed in a lovely resort called Sea Temple. It had a huge lagoon swimming pool that meandered around all the rooms and we were able to just jump into the pool from our room. We did quite a lot of swimming, even though the pool felt a little cold and the sun wasn’t really hot. It was just lovely to relax and do our own thing.
There is the most amazing looking golf course next to this resort and it looks very inviting. However, after my snake experience I decided not to even attempt a game! - Also, I heard that there were 3 or 4 crocodiles on the course! that definitely put me off!
Today, we went into Port Douglas to have a stroll around the local shops and to see the harbour. There was a beautiful view looking out to sea with the rain forest hills surrounding the area. We were lucky enough to see the local market which is held on a Sunday. Here they sold many local crafts and produce and it was all very interesting. It was lovely and sunny today and we really enjoyed our casual morning, stopping for a coffee right next to the marina where we saw many lovely boats moored up. After lunch it was back into the pool and just relaxing. Port Douglas is quite a popular tourist area with its street cafes and trendy restaurants. It gave a lovely sea side holiday feel.
***** Julian: Two lazy days for us yesterday and today as we traveled the short distance to Port Douglas where we stayed last night and will tonight. Yesterday we did very little other than swimming in the very large hotel pool a couple of times. This morning we took the local bus to the centre of Port Douglas, a pretty little coastal town fringed by the hills of the rainforest behind and with the sparkling waters leading to the Barrier Reef in front. A glorious sunny day and a vibrant Sunday market all added to the atmosphere - clear why this is a popular holiday town. Back to the hotel this afternoon for some more idling before we fly to Hamilton Island tomorrow to pick up our yacht for five days.
There is a lovely beach, four mile beach, by our hotel; however we cannot swim in the sea as it has not yet been declared box Jelly fish free. Apparently about now all the jellyfish go up the estuaries and rivers to breed, making it safe to swim in the sea - it is declared safe when no jelly fish have been located for seven days. Though safe is a moot point as there are also the occasional crocodiles in the sea here. Obviously keeping up Australia' s reputation as a great place, but ..... always a but.Back
