Julian: Another of our early starts this morning to catch a flight from Darwin to Cairns. Our flight time was 7.20 am, so I didn't expect the airport to be too busy, but it was - apparently Darwin has no night restrictions so has a lot of late and early flights allowing the airlines to maximise the use of their aircraft.
Travelling out of Cairns to Daintree a couple of hours North, we could quickly see the tropical nature of the area with a chain of low hills covered in the deep green trees of the rainforest and fields of sugar cane below. The road North winds along the coastline with rainforest on the left and a very blue looking sea to our right, until just short of Daintree we veered inland further into the rainforest near the Daintree river. There was a slight drizzle as we arrived at the Daintree Eco Lodge, our home for the next three nights. Our bungalow was set high above a valley, with a small stream below, on very long stilts which gave us an excellent, though somewhat dark, view into the upper reaches of the rainforest trees. We wandered down the road for a late lunch in the local tea shop - more of the excellent Australian Barramundi for me - and after lunch lazed the damp afternoon away catching up on photos, blogs, et al, before a lovely dinner by the pond area of the lodge.
***** Julia: Today, we had a very early start, leaving Darwin at 5.30 am to catch our flight to Cairns. We were met at Cairns by our driver who then drove us for a couple of hours to Daintree. The weather was sunny and bright and very humid here as they had had rain for about 2 weeks and today was the first good day they had had. Sadly, it meant more mosquitoes!
We are staying in an eco lodge in the rainforest, where it is dark. damp and shady with many mosquitos. Our room is quite small and stands on high stilts out over a little stream that runs by. Mosquito heaven! We manage to keep the room free of the little biters and there is air conditioning which is wonderful after the hot, sweaty camp we were at.
It is very quiet and relaxing here with not much to do in the area, so a good chance to rest a little.
